Some truly underrated cover albums:
Joan Baez, "Baez Sings Dylan"
Annie Lennox, "Medusa," especially "Waiting In Vain," "Whiter Shade of Pale," and "Train in Vain" (originals by Bob Marley and the Wailers, Procol Harum, and the Clash, respectively).
"Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin," especially Stone Temple Pilots' cover of "Dancing Days" and Sheryl Crow's cover of "D'yer Maker."
"Red Hot + Rhapsody," an album full of wonderful George Gershwin covers. Check out Sinead O'Connor's take on "Someone to Watch Over Me." Really, all the "Red Hot" albums are terrific, plus they've raised $7 million for AIDS relief worldwide.
All the "Reggae Pulse" CDs.
And some single tracks:
Bootsy Collins' cover of "Do You Love Me?" on the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" soundtrack.
Aretha Franklin's version of "Nessun Dorma" (originally from the opera "Turandot") on "Ultimate Divas." Gives me goosebumps, even though I can't understand a word.
Cornershop's cover (in Punjabi) of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" on "When I Was Born for the Seventh Time."
Finally, I discovered this great album of reggae covers about six years ago. It had Toots and the Maytals doing "Start Me Up," Yami Bolo covering "Johnny B. Goode" and Chrisinti covering "Good Riddance (The Time of Your Life)". I loved it, but I can't remember the album title! Can anyone help me out?
